This is why I will never make it in PR. The Jeep Liberty has some appear as an alternative to the big SUV. It's small, cute, and rugged. However, it's become embroiled in some safety problems. Daimler-Chrysler announced today that they were recalling what appears to be all production vehicles because a mechanical problem slows the airbag deployment by a small, but important amount. More troubling, AutoWeek put the Liberty through it's slalom test last month, and the Liberty rolled over twice. This test has been run for 9 years with the same two drivers, and no SUV has ever rolled over before.

In response to the incident, Chrysler said that, "the accident was an anomaly that did not reflect the safety of the vehicle."

Excuse me?

When Kara and I bought our Ford Explorer in '93, we were looking at light trucks. A car salesman was trying to sell me a Chevy Truck, and looked me straight in the eye and said, "This truck has been babied throughout it's life. The former owner was a contractor, and all he ever did with it was carry around wood, and you know, wood's really not heavy."

Like I was born yesterday.
